The city of Gräfenhainichen most famous son is the Lutheran hymnist Paul Gerhardt (1607–1676). The column-ornamented classicistic Paul-Gerhardt Chapel built in his hometown was christened in his honor. The memorial site today houses an extensive representation of Paul Gerhardts life and work.
