Corvey Castle and Monastery

Corvey Castle and Monastery is situated amidst a large park and garden with a very old collection of trees.  A Benedictine abbey was built in 822 upon the initiative of Louis the Pious, a son of Carl the Great, by monks from the French region of Corbie. Interesting historical aspects of the castle today and the former abbey is the unique 9th century Carolingian west front, the baroque cloister, the splendid Kaisersaal as well as the Royal Library. The poet of the German National Anthem Hoffmann von Fallersleben is buried at the neighboring cemetery.
