The Middle Elbe Biosphere Reserve
UNESCO protected since 1979
The Middle Elbe Biosphere Reserve is one of the oldest large-scale nature reserves in Germany. The Elbe flows largely naturally and has flooding space. This is why this stretch of land to this day still boasts wide pastures and century-old solitary oaks with the largest connected riverside forest complex in Central Europe.
Flora and fauna that have become virtually extinct in other parts of Europe still have a natural habitat here. Also the rural charms of the Garden Realm Dessau-Wörlitz which is part of the Middle Elbe Biosphere Reserve are affected by this.
