Museum Island Berlin

The history of the Museum Island began with the construction of the Altes Museum, began in 1830 at the behest of the Prussian Emperor Friedrich Wilhelm III. In the 100 years to follow, a unique ensemble of buildings was constructed, consisting of Pergamon-Museum, Altes Museum, Nationalgalerie, Bode-Museum and Neues Museum, which was added to UNESCO's list of World Heritage Sites in 1999.

The Museum Island belongs to the cultural heritage of the 19th century, the period of education and science. The idea for the museum is from a socio-historical perspective a result of the Enlightenment. Opening up royal collections and treasuries for the general public has been a postulation since the French Revolution. (Source: www.unesco.de)
