The 1260 year-old capital of Thuringia is characterized by its excellently preserved medieval city center, the best in Germany, its charming collection of rich Patrician houses and loving reconstruction half-timber houses. The city is watched over by the monumental ensemble of the St. Marien cathedral and the church of St Severi. Its bridge Krämerbrücke with 120 meters and 32 houses is Europe's longest fully built and inhabited bridge. Right next to the cathedral we find the only almost fully preserved city fortress in Central Europe with its extensively branched out underground labyrinth. Connection to: Gera Cycle-Hiking Trail.
