Under Carl the Great, Aachen became the center of the Carolingian empire and was the coronation town of German kings for over 600 years. Its cathedral with its octagonal cupola was the first German cultural monument to be listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Today, Aachen is a lively university town in the tri-country Euregio Aachen-Maastricht-Liege.
