D-Route 8 / The Rhine Route

The German leg of the River Rhine between Emmerich and Basel is one of the most important inland waterways in the world and is an industrial zone of global proportion. As a tourist, with the exception of the Middle Rhine, one shouldn't expect idyllic landscapes here. The route runs along both sides of the Rhine and passes through large cities and industrial zones. Behind Karlsruhe until you reach Basel the environment in the Upper Rhine Valley is more peaceful, between Basel and Lake Constance the route runs along the Upper Rhine.
