Cycling tourism in Germany

A growing sense of health, increased economic awareness and most importantly, a love for physical activity and nature is what drives Germany's cycle tourism forward.

Cycle tourism in Germany, as one of the most important demand segments, is generating billions worth in profit.

The latest basic research conducted by the German tourist association Deutsche Tourismusverband e.V. (DTV) has collected very important data on this issue.

  • every year at least 9.16 billion euros gross revenues are  spent by German bike tourists on
  • about 153 million day trips
  • ca. 22 million overnight stays
  • a touristic cycle network some 75,000 kilometers long
  • intense marketing activities in the tourism industry


The pilot project D-Route 3:

Within the framework of a transnational pilot project, D-Route 3 is being expanded into a premium long-distance cycle path.

With the initiative of the Federal government and five Federal States, D-Route 3 (European Bicycle Route R1) is being further developed as a model route for all other D-routes.

Cycling in Germany is therefore becoming even easier, more entertaining and more comfortable.

  • D-Route 3 route runs along the European Bicycle Route R1
  • first central axis of the cycling route in Germany being expanded
  • Exemplary expansion – the experience made here will be transferred to the other routes in the German cycle network
  • Project duration: 15. July 2008 to 30 June 2012
